Guy

Guy

BEING THE SAME WORD, BUT DIFFERENT

n. — a guide; a conductor or leader
— a rope used to guide or steady an object being hoisted (a guy-rope)
— a rope, chain, etc., used to secure or steady a structure liable to shift, as in a mast, bridge, derrick, antenna, etc.

fm. Old French, gui, extended to Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian, all meaning guide

…and giving us the nautical slang “to clap a guy on.” Not a round of applause at a bachelor party, it means to put a stop to. “Clap a guy on that sailor talk.”
