Zhuzh

BEING IN NEED OF SOME STYLE ‘ROUND ABOUT HERE

v. — to tweak, alter or adjust to provide a better fit or appearance; to brighten; to spiff up; to enliven

fm. origins unknown. Heck, even the spelling’s unclear, with tjuzs and tszuj common alternates.

Zhuzh was the spelling accepted by the American Dialect Society as part of its 2003 Word of the Year competition. That year tells you a little something about how zhuzh came to be…

…popularized by [Queer Eye for the Straight Guy] stylist Carson Kressley. The story is he learned it from Ralph Lauren, suggesting possible Yiddish roots. A study of Yiddish finds no firm associations, and so the word is likely [onomatopoeic] or imitative of other words in similar contexts, like “whoosh” or “juice.”

inspiration. a colleague of particular renown for her neologistic virtuosity
