Codswallop

BEING A WORD OF PLEASING SONORITY, EQUALLY PLEASING TO SAY

n. — nonsense; drivel

fm. origins unknown. The unsupported legend is that the word derives from British soft drink [bottle] manufacturer Hiram Codd (1838–87) + wallop, meaning a horse at the gallop, as a derogatory term for beer drinkers to use against soft drinks. (“Don’t give me that codswallop!”)

first published. 1959

inspiration. just looking for a bit of nonsense, really
